Being a native of Virginia, raised around the Petersburg area, I often get the question “why didn’t you go to VSU?” Yeah, I would be closer to home and whatnot, but honestly I love my school and my band. Currently WSSU and VSU are both a part of the CIAA division, which provides a rival between the bands. Naturally I am going to say that The Red Sea of Sound is the best but I must give the Trojan Explosion a chance. Trojan Explosion, under the direction of Dr. Mark W. Phillips, is a band which is a powerhouse of sorts. They know how to entertain their audiences with halftime performances. On September 17th, they participated in the 3-way Brawl for It All. This was a 3-way battle between VSU, NSU, and NCA&T. I will remain unbiased and will not voice my opinion as to whom I believe won but I will say that VSU represented the CIAA division well. However, I can only say so based off of clips on YouTube because I did not actually attend the event. Along with this 3-way brawl, VSU is also one of the bands in the CIAA division that is on the ballot for the 2011 Honda Battle of The Bands. This is the only band we, the RSOS, have to take into consideration when competing. As of now we do not know for sure who will attend this battle but this is the last week to vote. Therefore, I encourage everyone to vote for Winston Salem State. Good luck to all the bands represented, including VSU, and hopefully we will see you all in January.
I love your blog topic! It's a very interesting one, because you focus on the bands of HBCU's. I enjoy listening to HBCU bands so you caught my eye. I like the fact that you have researched all the bands that you feature in your blog, so you do know what you are talking about. This is a very exciting topic...keep up the good work! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting blog topic! I was in the marching band in high school and I often regret not being a part of the college band. There is so much more that goes into a great performance and having a rivalry makes competition much more exciting. I have not heard the Red Sea of Sound play, but it sounds like WSSU has something to be proud of!
ReplyDeleteI love your topic. It is different from what I expected. The background is great. It really fits the topic. Your post was good. I lioke how you gave a little information about you being from Virginia and tied it into the entry. I am glad that you choose WSSU, showing RAM PRIDE! I really like that you compared the schools, but you didn't say one was better than the other. You did indeed remain unbiased and you letter your reader know that you yourself was not there. Overall, I rather enjoyed it!
ReplyDelete@Akinyele Thank you for the feedback. I agree that HBCU marching bands are very interesting and this blog will provide information to those who may not know to much about the different bands.
ReplyDelete@Sheena- You are correct in your statement that there is much more that goes into a great performance. I too was in marching band in high school but it is my belief that collge band is more demanding with time. We practice later at night but we also have to maintain our grades. With that being said, the end product is rewarding considering how hard we work.
ReplyDelete@Raven- Thank you for your comment. I think it is important to try to remain unbiased in my posts because it encourages readers to view my blog without getting upset. The purpose of this blog is to promote "friendly" rivalry.
